Meeting Minutes
I. Call To Order The first meeting of the Environmental Club was not officially called to order. However, discussion began at 2:35 p.m. All officers were present. Dr. Ansell, Club Advisor, arrived 10 minutes later and was present for the remainder of the meeting.
II. Approval Of Minutes As this was the first Environmental Club meeting, there were not any previous minutes to approve.
III. Guest Speakers There were no guest speakers; however, Lori Myers, President of the club, announced that Dr. Candace Klaschus will be the guest speaker for our next meeting on September 25th. Dr. Klaschus is the director of the Honors Transfer Program and a Humanities teacher here at Las Positas, as well as our co-advisor. At our next meeting, she will be speaking about the Sierra Club. Dr. Klaschus is the membership officer of the Sierra Club in her district.
IV. Officer Reports A. President – Lori Myers Lori passed around a sign-in sheet. Because Dr. Ansell had not yet arrived, it was decided that she would just talk about the club in general. First, Lori asked that everyone introduce themselves. She, Gary Perdue, Elizabeth Learned, Sunny Bains, Parag Saraf, Tiffany Breger, Alex Stoeffl, Nicole Solovskoy, Christian Blanco, David Darlington, Steve Linney, and David Peterson all went around the table introducing themselves, saying how long they’ve been at Las Positas, and what their major is. Lori noted that she knew many members that were present from AGS. Next, Lori discussed what she foresees for our club and asked for everyone’s input. She would like to focus on environmental issues on the campus, such as recycling. She also would like members to be informed and educated about different environmental issues. We will be having different guest speakers, such as Dr. Klaschus, to help us achieve this and so that we can learn what we can do to get involved. In addition, Lori spoke about trying to focus on outdoor activities, such as an ocean kayaking trip at Monterey. She took this time to talk about her previous experience with this activity and asked if it sounded interesting to everyone. She is open to ideas of other activities we can do too and also mentioned possibly going to Año Nuevo. Another activity she has in mind is fundraising for the organization Adopt-A-Rainforest. Lori briefly described the organization and where our money would go. Because Dr. Ansell had arrived at this time, Lori began to go over the club constitution. We are the new version of the old Earth Club, so we will be using their constitution if we vote to adopt it. However, the name has been changed to Environmental Club. After passing out copies of the constitution, Lori read through it out loud. The membership fee as stated in our potential constitution is $10.00 per semester, but the fee is flexible and Lori is interested in hearing all members’ opinions. There were no objections at this time. Dr. Ansell clarified that Article VIII meant that all publicity for this club must have the club name on it as well as the college name. He explained that the constitution cannot be approved until the next club meeting. Lori moved on to say that she would like to have at least one scholarship for a student at the end of the year. There then followed a brief discussion about whether or not that would have to be included in the constitution. B. Vice President – Parag Saraf Parag had nothing to add at this time. C. Secretary – Tiffany Breger Tiffany had nothing to add at this time. D. Treasurer – Christian Blanco Christian had nothing to add at this time. E. ICC Representative – Steve Linney Steve began by talking about Club Day which will be on September 20th. The theme will be constitutional, meaning patriotic, and there will not be any sub-themes. Steve also said that November 7th there will be men’s and women’s basketball games. Men’s basketball is at 6:00 p.m. followed by women’s basketball at 8:00 p.m. Because of the goal to get people registered to vote, everyone who registers or already is registered will receive a sticker that will get them into the game free.
V. Unfinished Business Club Day was discussed in more detail. It was confirmed that we will have a table, but we are not required to have a game. The table will need to be decorated possibly with posters or banners, balloons, and a tablecloth. If anyone is able to donate decorations, it would be appreciated. Costumes are ok but not required. The event is from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., but Lori needs help starting at 10:00 a.m. for the set up. She then passed around a sign-up sheet so members could let her know what times they’re available to help.
VI. New Business Lori mentioned that this Saturday, the 16th of September, is National Coastal Cleanup Day. The closest site that we can participate in this event at is in Fremont. It will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00. Lori is going and encouraged members to go too. She will also be proposing this event to AGS as some of the volunteer work they can do. However, she does need to know in advance who is going so anyone who is interested in participating should let her know.
VII. Faculty Advisor – Dr. Ansell Dr. Ansell had nothing to add at this time.
VIII. Open Discussion/Announcements Lori wanted to know if anyone else had anything to discuss. The club will not be having a point system with point sheets to fill out, but she will be passing around a sign-in sheet each meeting. She will be making a note of who she sees at volunteering activities too. Lori wanted to let everyone know that she is not going to be in the running for the scholarship. We then discussed the difficulty in distinguishing between the recycling and regular trash bins. It may also help to get more labels regarding what is recyclable. Lori noted that near many of the bulletins used to hang up flyers, there are trash cans but not necessarily always recycling bins. In addition, she discussed the possibility of getting the copy center more involved in using recycled paper and giving teachers the option of making copies with recycled paper. It would also help to start doing more two-sided copying. Tiffany agreed to email everyone the minutes upon David’s request. Eventually, they will also probably be posted online at our website. Lori reminded everyone that Dr. Klaschus will be coming to our next meeting, and she may be able to discuss Honors Projects as well.
IV. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 3:14 p.m. Our next meeting will be on September 25th, 2006 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Club Room. |
