Meeting Minutes

I.           Call To Order

The meeting was called to order at 2:32 p.m. All officers were present. Dr. Ansell, our advisor, was present as well as Mr. Kutil, our new advisor.

II.         Welcome New Members

Our new members, Ke, Aaron, and Emmanuel, introduced themselves. Lori Myers, Club President, welcomed them to the club.

III.        Adoption Of Agenda

Lori handed out agendas to everyone. Steve Linney moved to adopt the agenda. Elizabeth Learned seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously.

IV.        Approval Of Minutes

Tiffany Breger passed around a few copies of the minutes from our September 11th and 25th meetings. Tiffany moved to amend the minutes from the 25th meeting in regards to Gary Perdue’s group being certified by the Guinness Book of World Records at the National Coastal Cleanup Day (end of Section V. – Guest Speakers). It was the whole Coastal Cleanup that was certified, not Gary’s specific group. Gary seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Steve moved to approve the minutes from both meetings. Elizabeth seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously.

V.         Guest Speakers

There were no guest speakers at this meeting.

VI.        Officer Reports

                 A. President – Lori Myers

Lori announced that there are a couple volunteer opportunities coming up. On our website, it is possible to access the Acterra calendar which is filled with volunteer opportunities, but she wanted to take a couple minutes to mention two of them incase we didn’t get the chance to view them ourselves. This Saturday, October 14th, there is a clean-up at Stonybrook Creek in Fremont from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. It is a potential steelhead trout spawning and rearing habitat. A free lunch and drinks will be provided. Anyone that wants more information can go to our website www.LPCEnvironmental.com and view the Acterra calendar (listed under our Projects and Activities page). The other opportunity is a South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Presentation on Saturday, October 21st from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. It is in Fremont at the San Francisco Bay Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge. Lori read off the description about the presentation. “The South Bay Restoration Project will transform South San Francisco Bay in the next few decades. How will this effect habitat, wildlife, and wildlife recreation? In this slide presentation, hear about the project, the role of Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge, and how you can become involved in the largest tidal wetland restoration project on the West Coast.” She mentioned that she was involved in a similar project, and it was a great experience.

          B. Vice President – Parag Saraf

Parag had nothing to add at this time.

          C. Secretary – Tiffany Breger

Tiffany had nothing to add at this time.

          D. Treasurer – Christian Blanco

Christian had nothing to add at this time.

          E. ICC Representative – Steve Linney

Steve let everyone know that the Major Exploration Fair is Wednesday, October 11th. Dr. Ansell explained that there will be booths set up with information about most of the majors on campus, and all students who go and talk to people at two different booths can get a sheet signed and receive a free lunch. It is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will give students the chance to learn more about their majors or potential majors. Steve also reported that we have a club code and can receive discounted copies at the back of the library. By putting in the code, the money will be deducted directly from our club account. Finally, he announced that the winners of Club Day were as follows: Decca received 1st place, Public Safety received 2nd place, the Latino Student Alliance received 3rd place, and the Art Club received an honorable mention. Lori suggested that next Club Day we get costumes.

VII.      Public Forum

No one had anything to say at this time.

VIII.     Unfinished Business

Lori explained that on Club Day, everyone contributed towards decorations, but she bought the bulk of the items, many of which we can reuse for future Club Days. She also thought that maybe next Club Day we can get trees. Lori said she wanted to see if we had a motion to reimburse her for the total of $37.77. Tiffany moved to reimburse Lori, Steve seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously.

IX.        New Business

Lori announced that the Muir Woods hiking trip will be on Saturday, October 28th. Then, she passed around a sign-up sheet for carpooling. She said that it’s also ok to go independently or to form our own groups. Answering Elizabeth’s question, Lori said that it will probably be an all day event, and we’ll get there around 10:00 a.m. and leave at 5:00 p.m. Lori also reminded everyone that there’s a $10 membership fee, but we have a couple months left before it’s due. However, in order for the club to fund our Muir Woods trip, anyone who will be going will need to pay the fee before October 26th. Members can give the money to Christian, Club Treasurer, or Lori. Lori let everyone know that if we don’t want to pay the fee, we are still welcome to come, but we will have to cover our own costs.

X.         Faculty Advisors – Dr. Ansell and Mr. Kutil

Dr. Ansell let us know that he spoke to Nancy Marling about a possible showing of The Inconvenient Truth. However, he was told that it would cost $600, so that won’t be an option. Instead, we can show the DVD when it comes out. Also, the field trip to Muir Woods will start and end at Muir Woods so as to avoid the liability of carpooling. Getting there will be our own arrangement and not officially club related. Dr. Ansell told us that he won’t be able to come to our meetings on the fourth Monday of every month because of a conflicting technology committee meeting. He also announced that we have $496 in our budget. Once we submit our forms, we should receive another $500.

XI.        Open Discussion/Announcements

Christian, who is a member of our recycling committee, said he did a search on recycling and found a website called www.gogreenintitiative.org. The organization helps schools with environmental issues and is in 13 states and 350 schools. Their five main principles are to generate compost, recycle, educate, evaluate, and nationalize the principles of responsible paper consumption. Christian said that it’s important for us to emphasize responsible paper consumption because of the large amount of paper we use on campus. There is also a guide and questionnaire on how to go about implementing responsible paper consumption in your school. There is a way to sign-up with the organization, and there isn’t a membership fee. We will be provided with manuals and information on recycling. Lori said that the Earth Club started recycling on campus, but right now the campus doesn’t use recycled paper, so the staff and students don’t have that option. We will be trying to find a way to change this. David Peterson announced that he is in the radio production class on campus. He is one of the DJs on Wednesdays from 2:00-4:00 p.m., and he has his own show which is on Fridays from 10:00-11:00 a.m. He discusses sports, from high school sports to professional sports, plays music, and makes announcements about events on campus. David said that he can announce anything we’d like about our club. Right now, the program is only on the internet (www.radiolaspositas.com) but they may get an FM license within the next couple years. We can drop by a note or agenda with information for him to announce. He will be in room 2141 on the specified days at the specified times. The program is broadcast nationally, and there are a lot of listeners. Lori asked if we’d be interested in going whale watching at Monterey Bay in November. She wanted our input as to if we wanted to do that or something else. Several members were interested. Another suggestion was to go rock climbing. She also said that regarding bringing food on the Muir Woods trip, we really aren’t supposed to bring anything because there’s a concern about people littering. We can bring backpacks and sneak it in, but there’s also a café there.

XII.      Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 3:03 p.m. Our next meeting will be on October 23rd, 2006 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Club Room.
